Gerry Read certainly did not invent sampling, but through sound manipulations in which old soul/house vocals are unrecognizable he uses it in innovative and engaging ways. He cuts micro-phrases almost brutally, deconstructs and reconstructs them into minimal, hypnotic loops until they are transformed into rhythm. His sound is rough and imperfect, with no climax or "big moments"-just extreme repetitions and microscopic changes that generate an upbeat and powerful hypnosis on the dance floor.
